De-matting
Matted dog?
I am familiar with a variety of de-matting techniques which allow for minimal shaving, and are happy to include them as part of my services for well adjusted pets. Dogs with an aversion to de-matting may need a short haircut now so that we can re-introduce them to brushing in a comfortable way, in order to achieve the desired haircut stress free in the future.
Is de-matting humane?
“Humanity over vanity” is often quoted in reference to shaving as a means to remove matts. This is because there are common circumstances where de-matting can cause pain or discomfort.
De-matting safely is a time consuming process, and rushing through can not only pull the skin painfully but also injure the dog with brush burn. In cases where the matts are solid and skin is not visible, even a careful groomer can cause injury due to lack of ability to monitor the skin.
For dogs who are matted because they do not tolerate brushing at home, pushing them through 8 weeks worth of brushing in the salon can overwhelm the dog and create more fear, even if the brushing is done carefully.
That is why de-matting is available only to dogs who can comfortably tolerate the process, as stated in my safety policy.
